Why Cockroach Farming is a Great Side Hustle
Breeding Cockroaches in Your Backyard is the new Cash Cow

I know what you’re thinking, Cockroach farming? Yes, that’s right. I did not know about cockroach farming until just over a month ago. It’s an insanely profitable business that you can run in your own backyard. There are a few people in my neighborhood who are breeding Cockroaches and they are earning good money.
In early June while jogging in my neighborhood, I came across a 40 something-year-old man. He had a bucket outside full of Cockroaches, and he was feeding them. I was very curious, so I asked. He told me he was breeding the Cockroaches so he can sell them for a good profit.
The old man’s name is Mendoza, he lives just a few blocks from my house. Mendoza says he started the business with cockroaches and meal worms a few months ago, after being retrenched.
He farms over 1600 cockroaches and 14000 worms, all at the back of his home.
After the success of growing vegetables and herbs in his garden under hydroponics, Mendoza wanted to find other conventional ways to make an income. He realized some of his customers require other products.
The cockroach business is still in its infancy. He only has 1600 roaches. To become a big supplier, he would need at least 60-thousand per day to satisfy the needs of international customers. His neighbors are quite taken with his new venture.
So far the demand both locally and internationally is high, and this type of farming business is very viable.
“There is definitely a future because they are in demand in the overseas market. In the overseas market, 10kg (21 pounds) is $700. Imagine every household having these worms, $700 each month you can get it, says one resident.
I was definitely interested in cockroach farming, adding $700+ extra every month, breeding Cockroaches, I was interested. I of course did some research, and it turns out Cockroach farming is booming in China.
One of the most well-known Cockroach farmers in China and the World is Wang Fuming. I was very inspired by Mr. Wang, he runs one of the largest Cockroach farms in China, and his earning millions every year.
The Cockroaches that Mendoza grows are not the common Cockroaches you see in your home. Instead, they are a unique breed called Periplaneta americana or better known as the American Cockroach.
They are widely eaten in China because they are a rich source of protein, they are also used as a raw material for medicine, which is in high demand by pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies.
In case you wondering, yes! I’m planning on starting my own cockroach business very soon. With this whole Covid-19 pandemic, it is the perfect side hustle, and I can do it in the safety of my home. The busier I am during quarantine the better.
It is just amazing to see the unique ways people make money. To succeed in this world you have to think differently, you have to try something new and fresh.
